Rent in arrears or having difficulty paying your rent
When your rent is in arrears it simply means you have fallen behind with your payments. The most important thing that you can do when this happens is talk to your landlord. Making contact with your landlord shows you are looking for a practical solution to the problem and if you wait for your landlord to notice they may take action against you which could lead to eviction.
If your rent is not yet in arrears your landlord could agree to give a payment holiday for a month or if you have gone into arrears an arrangement could be made to pay off the debt weekly or over another time period you can afford. Its better to be making some kind of regular payment.
If your rent is in arrears and your landlord does not want you to pay them back they might insist you leave, however, depending upon your tenancy agreement you might not have to. If things ever turn nasty between you and your landlord you should keep all correspondence and a record of the dates and times of any phone calls, you should also put rent money which you either do not pay to the landlord refuses to take to one side and do not spend any of it, this shows you were willing to pay (even if its not the full amount). Ideally you should keep these payments in a separate bank account and pay into it as if you were paying your rent.
Council Tax Benefits, Housing Benefits, Tax Credits are often options to help people who are struggling with rent, if you are already taking advantage of these things you local council could offer even more help (discretionary housing payments).
